MUST HAVE FOR ALL SPACE SHUTTLE FANATICS AS WELL AS CASUAL SPACE ENTHUSIASTS - REVIEW

This compilation looking back at 30 years of the space shuttle is the perfect commemoration of the spacecraft's lifetime. In the book, graphic artist Luke Wesley Price takes us on a stunning photographic history of the iconic vehicle, showcasing some of its defining moments. The vivid photographs are presented in gorgeous high resolution, with entire pages devoted to images of the space shuttle alongside jaw-dropping vistas of Earth. From the inaugural test flights of Enterprise to the final flight of Atlantis, Price excels in his ability to weave a tale through a selection of imagery, interesting facts and emotive storytelling. A must have for all space shuttle fanatics as well as casual space enthusiasts.

STUNNING... A MAGNIFICENT TRIBUTE TO AN AMAZING MACHINE
  5/5 STAR REVIEW
“Everything about this book’s production is outstanding. The photo selection, reproduction, layout, materials, binding, packaging... all top-notch.
For any Shuttle or space enthusiast on the fence about purchasing a copy, it might be more useful for me, by way of review, to elaborate on what this book is and what it isn’t.
Space Shuttle: A Photographic Journey is not a linear history-in-pictures of the Shuttle program... it’s more of a celebration, and a beautifully executed aesthetic study of the machine itself.
After a prologue, the volume is presented in four parts depicting the phases of a Shuttle mission: Preparation, launch and ascent, on-orbit, and return to earth. Within each section are photographs of each phase from throughout the program. All the iconic images are here, from Columbia on the pad, floodlit at night before STS-1, the first launch and touchdown at Edwards, Bruce McCandless flying free with the MMU... all the way to Paolo Nespoli’s shot of Endeavour docked with the ISS and the last launch and landing, with hundreds more less-seen but well-selected and stunningly presented photographs depicting both the Shuttle’s staggering complexity and almost stately beauty. Yeah, I said “beauty.” Anyone who browses through this book and sees a “flying brick” doesn’t get it and never will.
Indeed, aside from the terrific production, I think what most pointedly makes this “not just another Shuttle book”, is that it is focused entirely on the machine itself. The only astronauts’ faces to be seen herein are those of the STS-74 crew peering out at Mir through the flight deck overhead windows. There are no shots of crews in Hawaiian shirts “surfing” in microgravity, or batting M&M’s across the cabin into each other’s mouths. Don’t get me wrong, that stuff tickles me as much as anyone, but it’s simply outside the purview of this book.
On a related but vastly grimmer note...I mentioned iconic images earlier. There are at least two that you will not see yet again between this book’s covers, those of the destruction of Challenger and Columbia. Luke Wesley Price dedicated this volume to the fourteen souls aboard those two final missions, but saw no need to include their final moments in his visual narrative.
I believe that this is entirely consistent with this book’s purpose. Space Shuttle: A Photographic Journey is not an elegy but a visual celebration of a truly revolutionary technological achievement, and it is a magnificent visual tribute to the efforts--and sacrifices--of those who made it happen.”

NASA HAS A TABLE TOP PHOTO SHOP
  5/5 STAR REVIEW
“As a keen photographer I was eager to get hold of this very well reviewed book, WOW!, it just oozes sheer quality from the first image of the shuttles main engine on test, through chapters from roll out to the launch pad, lift off, in orbit, missions, internal shots, EVA’s, re-entry, and landing, the images are fantastic, really breathtaking, a few never before seen, the early flights images are a bit grainy in some places, but these are due to the early morning lift off or night time, remember some of the earlier shots are pre digital, just good old film stock, remember film!! Overall the photographs are awesome with some nifty angles being shown, each image has a few lines of description, if it is the many facts and figures you want get the “haynes space shuttle manual”, also available from amazon, at the back are all the mission crew lists, mission goals, dates, etc, and a beautiful collection of all the 135 STS flight badges, apart from the excellent images it is the sheer quality of the book that grabs your attention, the finest paper is used and the quality of the printing is second to none and is very professionally bound ,this is a heavy book which will reign supreme on your coffee table if you can put it down, this is a comprehensive overview of the shuttle programme from first to last flight, if you only buy one book showcasing shuttle images then is has to be this magnificent tome, I recommend this book very highly, buy it now.”

QUALITY PHOTOGRAPHIC RECORD OF SPACE SHUTTLE PROGRAM
  5/5 STAR REVIEW
“If you are interested in spaceflight you will have seen lots of books covering the Space Shuttle program... but if you want to see the very best collection of images of the shuttle in action this quality book is the one to buy.
The book oozes with quality - from the paper, the production, the layout, to the choice and quality of the images. The focus is on the machinery rather than the astronauts which is no bad thing.
The Space Shuttle is one beautiful spacecraft and this book shows it in all its glory from pre-launch to post landing
Highly recommended tribute to the 30 year Shuttle program. You won’t find a better photographic record on the Space Shuttle than this.”

AN AWESOME CELEBRATION
  5/5 STAR REVIEW
“This book is a fabulous tribute to the greatest machine man has ever built, the Space Shuttle(s). From the sheer quality of the book itself, the photographs take you through snapshots in time during the Shuttles various missions, some focusing on the Shuttles themselves in space and some from the launchpads. There is just enough text to accompany the photos but this is very much a visual experience through photos and fabulous they are too. The hairs on my neck and arms stood up on several occasions where a photo would remind me of a certain mission, especially some of the launch shots: they were of such high quality you could almost be there, listening to the rumbling and crackling of the rockets as the Shuttle powered into space. As some of my fellow reviewers have noted, there are no photographs to remind us of the few sad moments with Challenger and Columbia, or even parading Endeavour through the streets of LA saying its final goodbyes - this is indeed a celebration of an incredible achievement by NASA and everyone else involved in the Shuttle programme, giving the purchaser a very uplifting experience and the greatest respect to what Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Endeavour and Atlantis achieved. Some lovely touches at the back of the book with the 135 mission patches, crew members and launch dates, and the book comes in a nice cardboard box. The author, Luke Wesley Price, gets a huge pat on the back from me for a job very well done.”

A BEAUTIFUL COLLECTION   5/5 STAR REVIEW

“If you are interested in the Shuttle and the visual history of manned spaceflight, then get this book! This is a stunning visual feast of beautiful photographs, put together by an English fan of the program and the Shuttle who just happens to be a graphic designer. The book’s production values are very high and the book is very well put together with gorgeous full page reproductions of the best photographs the author could find. The book covers all five Shuttles and has additional material covering the people and missions. I recommend this book without reservation to all spaceflight fans and anyone who enjoys a beautiful book.”

A STUNNING VISUAL FEAST
Having met the author Luke at Space Lectures' Alan Bean event last Saturday I had the privilege of taking an in depth view of his superb book. It is a stunning visual feast of the entire history of the space shuttle taking in all five orbiters and every mission. Luke has obviously spent a great deal of time and creative energy compiling the definitive photographic history of the STS programme.
The photos have been carefully selected and formatted on to high quality gloss paper coupled with descriptive text with each photo.
The book is the space shuttle comparable to Michael Light's "Full Moon" photographic history of the Apollo moon landings.
Well done Luke for producing this stunning book.

A TRUE WORK OF ART - BEAUTIFULLY DESIGNED TOME
There was always a risk that this was going to be "just another shuttle book" ... but it's not. Beautifully selected shots and quality production. The bespoke packaging is a nice touch. Very pleased to have this in my collection.

STUNNING AND UNIQUE
Copy no. 102 arrived here late last week.
I've only had time so far to quickly flip through the pages, but as others have said, the book is a stunning visual tribute to the space shuttle program.
The photos are well chosen, capturing the splendor of the spacecraft and its different phases of flight.
Congratulations Luke, on the release. It was definitely worth the wait...

SHEER QUALITY

In addition to copy #99, I also bought a non-numbered copy from Amazon. By coincidence, both arrived on Monday.
First of all, I can only echo others' sentiments on the sheer quality of this book. The photo selection, reproduction, layout, materials, binding, packaging... all top-notch.
For those still on the fence about purchasing a copy, it might be more useful for me, by way of review, to elaborate on what this book is and what it isn't.

COULDN'T ASK FOR MORE IN A BOOK... BEAUTIFULLY CRAFTED AND A JOY TO READ

I received Copy #91 this week. This, in my opinion, is the ultimate (photographic) souvenir of the shuttle program.
After gazing through these magnificent photos, I took the time to see which flights were represented.
Seven missions are illustrated in the "pre-Challenger" era.
Nineteen flights used for the "post Challenger to Columbia" era.
And, of the 22 "post Columbia" missions flown, 20 are illustrated in this book.
Fantastic job, Luke Wesley Price... couldn't ask for more!

REALLY IMPRESSED WITH THIS BOOK

Dear Mr Price,
Your magnificent book arrived today and I am really impressed, not only with the production quality of the book but also your choice of photos to illustrate 30 years of the space shuttle.  These really are the best photos out of the thousands taken. Your decision to concentrate on the vehicles rather than the astronauts was also a good one - interior views of crews at work would have been a distraction.
It must have been a difficult job selecting the photos due to the huge number of fantastic views available from NASA.  You probably had enough material for 10 books!
I spent over 20 years back in the 80's and 90's as a spaceflight researcher and had material published in both the UK and US (magazine and journal articles).  I followed the STS program from beginning to end and was lucky to get access to KSC in my role as a researcher as well as representing SPACEFLIGHT magazine.  Got to walk around and under Endeavour in the Orbiter Processing Facility after it's maiden mission.....got up close to Atlantis on the pad with the Rotating Service structure rolled back......saw Columbia launch on STS - 94 from next to the countdown clock at the press site which was a fantastic experience.  For several years I had an annual shuttle pictorial summary article published in SPACEFLIGHT - similar mission summary to yours and a selection of photos from that particular year's missions.
I am attaching a panorama of two images taken by Jeff Hoffman on STS-61 during a Hubble Space Telescope repair EVA.  NASA never made these available as a general press release and I only found out about them whilst corresponding with Hoffman.  Gives a good view of the orbiter from the end of the manipulator arm.
Well done with the book - very impressed and I can't see how it could possibly be improved on. Great to see all the patches reproduced in colour for the missions as well as mission info.  The photos however are what makes it a joy to possess.

Any thoughts about a follow up?

Best wishes, Keith

WELL WORTH WAITING FOR AND HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

My copy was waiting for me when I got home from a work trip. What an absolute delight to open the package and find a bespoke box containing the best space shuttle book I have seen. It oozes quality even before you open the printed box and continues to the last page. A fitting testament to the hard work that Luke has put into it and a suitable tribute to the Space Shuttle Program.

Well worth waiting for and I highly recommend it to others.

WELL WORTH THE WAIT

Copy No. 108 arrived here in Cleveland and like the others above it was well worth the wait. I have been playing a game while looking at the outstanding photos...trying to see if I know the mission BEFORE reading the caption. Try it!\

I CAN'T PUT THIS BOOK DOWN!
I received my copy yesterday and I am quite impressed with the quality of printing/layout and the selection of photographs. I was up late into the night poring over every page.
I'd also like to comment on the packaging. I ordered this book along with another unrelated title through amazon.com. Both books were shipped together in one box. The other title was loose in the shipping container and sustained minor corner dents and dust cover scratches. The Luke Wesley Price book was absolutely pristine, the book comes enclosed in its own sturdy protective box.

Kudos on both your book and your choice of packaging.

CONGRATULATIONS ON A SUPERB JOB

Having got your book for Xmas (indeed the only thing on my list) I wanted to congratulate you on a superb job – the book is not only a fitting tribute to everyone involved in the STS project, but also a work of art which certainly fulfils the scope of keeping the dream alive.
Indeed one of my boyhood dreams in the 80s was to see a shuttle launch and I was very fortunate to achieve this in July 2011 seeing Atlantis  blast off for the very last time.
I would now like to buy a signed copy to keep in perfect condition and wondered if you still have numbered copy 135 for sale, or failing that no 66 which is my birth year and also of course another Atlantic mission. Thank you
